The Chissano Gallery showcases the works of famous sculptor Alberto Chissano, a Mozambican artist famous for his wood, stone and iron sculptures.
Chissano was born to a rural family in Mozambique, herding animals and with limited education. He only began sculpting when he was 29 years old and was inspired when he took a job cleaning in an artistic association. He put on his first solo show in 1964, and since then has won prizes for his art including the Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) Town Council's First Prize in sculpture in 1966 and first and second prizes in Yugoslavia in 1981.
