Directions to Lake Cahora Bassa
The Cahora Bassa dam forms Cahora Bassa Lake. The dam is jointly owned by Mozambique and Portugal. From independence in 1974 up until 2007, eighteen percent of the dam and lake were owned by Mozambique and eighty-two percent by Portugal, but in 2007 Portugal reduced its share to 15%.
The Cahora Bassa Dam is the largest hydroelectric power plant in southern Africa and the most efficient power generating station in Mozambique.
The lake is a nice place to go on holiday near Tete, especially on a day trip if you are staying in Tete or Sango, the nearby town. The dam is located about 120kms from the town of Tete. The Ugezi Tiger Lodge is located on the lake and is a nice place to go for a meal and to organize boat tours of the dam. One can also fish for freshwater bream and other types of fish, and crocodiles can be spotted from the boats or shore.
This is a nice place to go if you are interested in doing a boat tour of the dam and learning some of the histories of the area. There are also hills either side of the dam which, if you are feeling adventurous, you can climb for some breathtaking views of the lake's blue waters and surrounding greenery.
