- In the Inhambane estuary, we have several islands that can be visited depending on the tides. Some of these islands are completely submerged at high tide (Pansy Island), while others, specifically Pig Island, have permanent inhabitants. Pig Island has a maximum elevation above sea level of 11 meters. However, most of the island is only 1 meter above sea level. It has a population of about 800 people who rely on solar and battery power. They are self-sufficient with a school, church, clinic, and a few barraca restaurants. Most of the residents are fishermen, fishing from the dhows or fish kraals in the area. And the women collect local mussels and oysters in the shallow waters when the tide is low. It is a truly memorable experience. Please don't forget to bring your GoPro.
